How big is a “bite” of apple?
An experiment to determine the size of a bite of apple.

The apple used for my experiment was a tree-ripened winesap apple acquired from a roadside market near Buckeye, West Virginia. It had an initial weight of 420 grams. I took the first bite at the apple’s “equator” while holding the stem-core axis horizontally. The flesh was crisp and had a sweet-tart flavor. My subsequent bites followed the apple’s equator, each of them being targeted at the longitudinal verge of its predecessor. Nine bites completed the circuit of the apple, and a tenth bite was made to the apple’s generous northern hemisphere. When the apple was again weighed, the result was 300 grams. I conclude, therefore, that the average size of a bite of apple is 12 grams.
