Shutdown carbon offsets
I've heard almost every argument under the sun when it comes to greenhouse gases compensation model friends and colleagues. After hearing these arguments for the first time often ask me if the comments were justified or if they were just a bunch of excuses for not volunteering to take the plunge (In the context of travel). For the purposes of this article, "carbon offsets" and "offsets greenhouse gases" used interchangeably. Although carbon dioxide is considered an important greenhouse gas (GHG), is not only greenhouse gas that is compensated through many programs available worldwide.
Those not so familiar with all forms of carbon offsets often immediately associate the concept of to reforestation or planting of trees that can produce a carbon sink and help an individual, group or organization to achieve a "climate neutral" rating on your state. While this is a common form of carbon offsetting, there are several other useful types of offset projects. This is important because a lot of controversy around the compensation seems to have its roots in the criticism of reforestation.
While many organizations and individuals to invest in gas offsets greenhouse regardless of travel (for example, industrial clearing operations), an important engine for the birth of this model is pollution caused by our local and international travel. While road transport, obviously, constitutes a large portion of world CO2 emissions, the intensity (impact per passenger km) and the diversity of air travel is out too. In addition to altering the atmospheric concentrations of CO2, ozone and methane emissions plane lead to the formation of contrails, water vapor emitted at the same time, sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, nitrogen dioxide and soot8.
Although it appears that there is sufficient evidence linking our trips (mostly by car and plane) to global warming and the degradation of the atmosphere, many passengers do not dare to take the next step to offset their emissions, while away from home. Yes, not everyone feels strongly enough about the environment to pay more are traveling on a voluntary basis … but among those who believe that this reluctance is rooted both in the public sector and carbon neutral "companies. I feel should therefore put more effort to maintain offsets greenhouse gases transparent and useful. When it comes to investing in carbon or greenhouse gas offsets gases, the onus is on you as the consumer to ensure they are contributing to a real program and efficient offset printing. When you do your research and invest only in companies that have taken all appropriate measures, will help add more credibility to certification programs and encourage organizations to improve their business and operate more responsibly.
Foundations such as the Gold Standard makes a decision much easier as they work to alleviate major concerns about this economic model of the environment and provide a label for carbon offset projects. To facilitate research, independent web sites simplify the process by allowing access to a useful database of greenhouse gas companies to offset an objective assessment included. These companies have been rapidly emerging out of wood so it is important to know who is legit and who is not – most importantly, know where your investment goes.
After doing more research myself, I am convinced that the process of buying / carbon offsets greenhouse gases can be fair and rewarding, but also of lasting benefit to the environment. Also agree with what David Suzuki said that when he saw the "if you were Prime Minister Tour "- at least in the short term, as more toward cleaner technologies and methods, carbon offsets help fill the void. A certain amount of trust is ultimately put to compensate the company and also to a third party to ensure that the project is controlled and rational, but the maturity of the certificates and carbon offset organizations, many buyers believe this is a non-issue.
In conclusion, I will not start name celebrities and musicians who swear by carbon offsets while on tour – I'll spare you the lame angle.
