Laying Horses To Lose – 3 Top Tips To Profit From Laying Horses On Betfair
Laying horses to lose, at first glance seems a lot more attractive than trying to find the winner, after all, only one horse can win a race and all the others have to lose. Surely that is easier than picking the winner of a horse race. Well, that’s the theory, but in practice it isn’t quite as straightforward. This article looks at why this is and gives you 3 ways to start profiting from laying horses to lose on Betfair.
So why is it that laying horses is not as easy as it sounds? It is largely due to the way in which the odds on Betfair differ from the true odds. Whilst the lower priced horses, which are more likely to win will be trading at odds only slightly above what the bookmakers are offering, the horses with the longer odds, perhaps 10/1 and above, will only be available to lay at prices far above a fair price. So whilst it may be fairly easy to pick a string of losers at high prices, the odds available to lay will be too high to represent value and not reflect the true chance of the horse winning. Consequently, the horse that you may have laid at 20/1 will probably win 6 or 7 times out of 100 as opposed to the 5 or so that the odds would suggest.
The obvious result will be a string of winning lays followed by 1 or 2 horses that win and lose everything you have won so far and more. This is indeed what happened to many people, leading them to declare that laying horses doesn’t work and vow to stick to backing horses to win. There is, however much more to laying horses than this and the following are three highly effective ways to incorporate laying on Betfair into your betting strategy:
1. Laying horses in-play:
As well as being able to back and lay horses on Betfair before the race, the markets remain open to allow you to continue backing or laying as the race is being run, right up to when the winner crosses the finishing post. With the right approach, and by picking the horses and race types carefully, backing a horse before the start of the race, then layng the same horse at a lower price during the race can be used very effectively to produce profits with a very low risk.
2. Laying 2 or more horses:
Only one horse can win the race (with the exception of the rare “dead-heats”), but in many races where the horses are well matched, and the course and distance are condusive to a tight finish, the odds can move very rapidly allowing you to lay more than one horse at low odds. The end result being a profit if 2 or more horses are matched.
3. Trading the odds:
Instead of simply backing a horse and waiting to see if it wins, or laying a horse and hoping it loses, by backing at high odds and laying at lower odds a profit can be guaranteed. This can be applied in many ways with the back and lay bets places at any time from early morning right up to whilst the race is taking place.
